Get a really good set of opinions for this pricey investment. And that would be Consumer Reports at:

Over the last 15 years we have had 2 snow blowers one at work and one at the cottage. Both are MTD’s they have Tecumseh engines and they stand up very well. If you are using it to clear your sidewalk as well make sure that the width is the correct size so that you won’t ***** up the lawn along the sidewalk. We also found that they were the most reasonably priced.

Whatever choice you make, ensure you perform routine maintenance. Every spring change the oil and drain the fuel tank. Grease the axles and intake augers. Properly maintained the snowblower will last many years, but neglected will be problematic and unreliable.

it all depends on how much snow you get. i live in up state ny. we get about 80+ inches per year i have a 8.5 hp snow blower that works fine and my drive way is like 100′ long with a big turn around area. most folks that get less snow would do ok with 5- 8 hp size with 18-24 inch wide in feed chute. I bought a troy-built cuz of the reputation for longevity. i DO recommend that you have what ever you buy serviced and tuned up every year
