I still mow my yard(no kids at home now) and I was shoveling until someone GAVE me a snow blower.I had to fix it before it would run.

I started mowing the lawn when I was 8, so my parents would probably be reported to CPS if they required this nowadays for child endangerment. I am in agreement, I never see kids outside working along with their parents in the yard. I was pulling weeds and picking up dog **** well before the age of 8, and turning 8 and being able to mow the lawn was a HUGE stepping stone in our family--we were even excited about it! I also shoveled snow, starting when I was 9 (before then we didn't live where it snowed), but my brothers who helped out with that were 7 and 5 at the time.

My kids already do a lot. My 5-year-old vacuums his bedroom and the other kids do all the toy cleaning (I refuse to pick up toys--I didn't make the mess!). My 5 and 3-year-old set the table together regularly and they also both help clear out the dishwasher. You can bet that when we get a house with a yard, they will be out doing yard work with us. We live with my parents currently, so I wouldn't feel comfortable with my kids weeding here (afraid they'll pull up plants instead of weeds like I did--my parents have less patience with those kind of things now then they did back then), but my parents request that my boys wash off the back patio every Saturday (the dogs tend to *** there instead of the yard) and pick up the dog **** (yes, with gloves!).

But I think there are a lot of kids these days who are raised without having to lift a finger and they have no work ethic and are lazy. Just ask my husband who employs kids as young as 16 what kind of work ethic a lot of his employees have and what the turnover rate is due to laziness and lack of caring about their job. It's a different world now. Of course, making a kid work might be considered child abuse, so I don't know...

I never mowed the lawn or shoveled snow as a kid. As an adult I have mowed the lawn twice and shoveled maybe 4 times. Im 30 and usually my Dad or one of my brothers does it for me. And btw I live in MN where shoveling is a daily occurance.

My husband mows our lawn as much as possible because he needs the exercise more than my son.

My son has other chores around the house, however, along with both his schoolwork and his own job.

I do it. We do all that stuff, but we mow the back yard with a tractor mower. Our back yard is big. But yea, i don't know why people are buying that stuff. Makes it easier. Thats for sure.

I never did. Mowing the lawn and shoveling the snow was something my father did but not us kids. We were to clean our own rooms and pick up after ourselves and make sure our dirty laundry got taken into the laundry room stuff like that but things like mowing the grass and shoveling snow were looked at as adult responsibilities by both my parents.
