Start a Snowblower without a key?

I have a Chieftain 22 Electric Snowblower that is missing a key. I have tried to order one from MTD but the part has been discontinued. From searching online, I believe that it was made in 1989. I just returned from a small engine repair shop and was told that there was nothing they could do to help me get it started since the part is no longer available. Is there a way to hotwire the snowblower where it will still be safe to use? Thanks!
